Everything You Need to Know About Renting a Trumpet

The trumpet is one of the most popular entry points when it comes to learning how to play a brass instrument. It’s small enough for easy transportation, even for children. And yet can make a really BIG sound. But with only three valves to master, it doesn’t take long for those big sounds to start becoming something more than simply noise. Even still, the trumpet isn’t for everyone, and it’s always a good idea to start your learning journey with a rental instrument. Here’s what you need to know about doing that.

What do you need to know about trumpets?

Although the design has evolved, trumpets are one of the oldest musical instruments. In fact, a pair of trumpets were recovered from Tutankhamun's tomb. They’re more than 3,000 years old and apparently still playable.

Cylindrical in shape and made almost entirely out of brass –the steel screws that hold it together and the cork on the water key being the only exception – the trumpet produces sound when a player ‘buzzes’ his or her lips in the mouthpiece. The air and vibrations pass through the tubes, and the compression of the valves dictates the notes that are produced. What trumpet do you want to play?

There are ten different trumpets to choose from, categorized according to the size of the instrument and the materials they are made from. And the main difference between them is the key in which they play. The most popular with learners is the Bb trumpet. Also known as the ABC or student trumpet because it doesn’t take a lot of practice to be able to make these instruments sound pretty good.

The second most popular is the C trumpet. It’s very similar to the Bb trumpet in shape and use, but it has a brighter sound. The C trumpet is favored in American orchestras.

The only thing your Rent From Home contract doesn’t cover is day to day maintenance – you’d never have the thing if it was always coming back to us for cleaning! If you want your instrument to deliver the best performance possible, you need to carry out basic day to day care.

· After each use, blow the moisture out of your instrument.

· Clean your mouthpiece every time you play. Warm, soapy water and a mouthpiece brush are all you need.

· Remove the fingerprints from your trumpet with a soft cloth. For a real shine, you can use some trumpet polish.

· Periodically apply grease to your trumpet’s slides, and valve oil to each valve, being careful to replace the valves correctly.

· If your trumpet doesn’t seem to sound very bright, take the instrument apart and carefully clean all sections in warm, soapy water before reassembling. If you’re not sure how, check out this helpful YouTube clip.

· When not in use, keep your trumpet in its dedicated storage case. And remember not to store anything else in the case with it.

Learning the trumpet can be a really rewarding experience and deliver a lifetime’s enjoyment of music. But it’s always wise to begin any musical journey with a rental instrument. Because you never know how an instrument is going to feel until you start to play it.
